Fake stones are beautiful

When I built my large vivarium (180 cm wide x 70 cm deep x 120 cm high), my plan was to create a shallow riverbed using artificial stones. After searching for the right ones, I found fake stones and rock modules from RockZolid, a supplier known for their aquarium backwalls, especially in cichlid tanks.

Their products aren't cheap, but they're beautifully crafted from polyester and hand-painted, so even two stones of the same model have different colors. They’re also extremely lightweight because they’re hollow, making them perfect for a glass vivarium. The stones have small holes, so when placed in a riverbed, they fill with water and don’t float.

For underwater use, it's recommended to apply an extra layer of transparent epoxy to prevent algae from deteriorating the natural colors. Since I planned to keep them above the water level, I used them as they were without the extra layer.

In my riverbed, I used the Riverstone Modules, a range of artificial stones from about 12 cm to 40-60 cm in diameter. I used modules from 12 to 35 cm to create a natural appearance for the riverbed.

On the back wall, I used the Stone Modules, also ranging fromabout 10 cm till 60 cm, which are hollow stones cut in half with a flat edge to glue onto glass.

I have two vivariums with these stones, and after three years, I can say they remain beautiful. With some moss growth, they have become even more attractive.
